Vol. 388 No. 8

Written Answers. - Psychotherapy Services.

129.

asked the Minister for Health if his attention has been drawn to the work of the Centre for Education Counselling and Psychotherapy in Cork; if his attention had further been drawn to their acute current financial needs; if he will consider, directly or through the Southern Health Board, allocating some finance towards their work; and if he will make a statement on the further role of psychotherapy services within the mental health and overall health services.

I am aware of the work undertaken by the centre referred to by the Deputy. I have had inquiries made of the Southern Health Board and I have been informed that as the board is concentrating on developing its own statutory based services, it is unlikely to be in a position to provide the centre with financial assistance. The centre has made an application to my Department for a grant from the national lottery. It is being considered in the light of the many competing demands for assistance from the national lottery.

It is envisaged that the provision of psychotherapy services will be an integral part of the catchment area psychiatric services provided by each health board.
