Vol. 388 No. 8

Written Answers. - Acute Hospitals Services.

140.

asked the Minister for Health the number of acute general hospitals, public and voluntary, in Ireland in (a) 1987 and (b) 1988; the number of (a) in-patients and (b) out-patients treated; and the financial allocation made to each hospital in each of these years.

The number of acute health board and public voluntary hospitals in 1987 was 73; in 1988 the figure was 66. A number of the hospitals in question amalgamated in the period of changed designation from acute to long-stay.

The number of in-patients treated in such acute hospitals in 1987 was 497,717 compared with approximately 482,854 in 1988. A valid comparison of these figures must take account of the changes in clinical medicine and the increasing tendency to provide acute services on a day care basis, where appropriate. In 1987 there were 88,405 day cases treated which increased to 101,804 in 1988. The number of out-patients treated increased from 1,528,365 in 1987 to 1,579,240 in 1988.

The allocations made to each hospital are as set out in the following schedules.

Note: The classification of income at cost centre level varies in the case of health boards and for this reason it is more appropriate to use gross outturn figures for purposes of comparison.

asked the Minister for Health the plans he has for the co-ordination and rationalisation of acute hospital services in the Cork urban area, as stated by him in Dáil Éireann on 19 May 1987; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

In my statement of 19 May 1987 I mentioned the urgent need in Cork for better co-ordination between the voluntary hospitals and between the voluntary hospitals and the health board. A group was established in 1988 to increase co-ordination between the Southern Health Board, the Mercy Hospital and the South Infirmary/Victoria Hospital. The purpose of the discussions is to ensure the closest possible co-operation between the three general hospitals and the most effective organisation of services.

The group which is chaired by an official of this Department and includes representatives of the voluntary hospitals and the Southern Health Board has examined the organisation of accident and emergency services, cost containment measures and improving hospital services for the elderly. As a result of the group's work changes have been made to the organisation of accident and emergency services, the hospitals are co-operating on cost saving methods and plans are being prepared for a specialist geriatric service in the voluntary hospitals.
