Vol. 388 No. 9

Written Answers. - South Lebanese Incident.

38.

asked the Minister for Foreign Affairs if his attention has been drawn to a report that a member of the Israeli Defence Forces threatened to blow an Irish armoured personnel carrier off the road in south Lebanon; and if he has contacted the Israeli Government to protest about this incident.

My attention has been drawn to an altercation between members of the so-called South Lebanon Army and Irish UN troops on 1 April 1989. A threat to clear UN vehicles by force was made during the incident. However, this threat was not carried out. A protest in regard to the incident, in line with many similar ones, was made through the channel of UNIFIL headquarters at Naqoura, which channel was deemed the most appropriate in the circumstances.
