Vol. 388 No. 9

Written Answers. - Anglo-Irish Conference Meeting.

44.

asked the Minister for Foreign Affairs if he will outline the matters discussed at the recent Anglo-Irish Conference meeting in Belfast; if both Governments acknowledge the need for changes in the operation of the Anglo-Irish Agreement in order to facilitate political progress in Northern Ireland; if the matter of the continued bomb attacks on the Dublin. Belfast railway line was discussed; if any initiatives are planned to ensure that the line is kept open; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

The joint statement is issued after the meeting of the Anglo-Irish Conference on 5 April outlines the issues that were discussed at the conference and I have arranged for a copy to be placed in the Dáil Library.

The Government are committed to achieve implementation of the Anglo-Irish Agreement. In accordance with Article 11 of the agreement, the working of the conference is being reviewed at present by the two Governments to see whether any changes in the scope and nature of its activities are desirable; this review will be completed shortly and its outcome will be made public.

My Department have been in close contact with the British authorities on the matter of keeping the Dublin-Belfast railway line open and safe for travel. The Deputy will recall that I made a statement on 13 March in which I condemned the campaign against the railway line in the strongest possible terms.
