Vol. 388 No. 9

Written Answers. - Out-of-Status Irish Immigrants.

64.

asked the Minister for Foreign Affairs if he is concerned about recent reports of exploitation of illegal Irish immigrants in the United States; and the steps he intends to take to prevent further occurrences of exploitation.

I have noted with concern reports, which have been few in number, about the apparent exploitation of out-of-status Irish immigrants in the US. I have instructed our Consulates General to monitor each incident and provide such assistance and advice as is necessary.

The matter is connected with that of the regularisation of the status of Irish emigrants in the US. As this House is aware of the Government is tackling this issue on two levels — the effort to secure amendments to US Immigration Law and the provisions of advisory services, through our Consulates General, on how emigrants might regularise their status on an individual basis.
