Vol. 388 No. 10

Written Answers. - Extradition Case Costs.

36.

asked the Minister for Justice the costs in the extradition case involving Kevin McDonald.

I am informed by the Attorney General that no payments of costs have been made by the State to date to Mr. McDonald's lawyers but that costs will be payable on foot of recommendations made by the courts in the proceedings when the amounts have been calculated.

As for the separate matter of the fees payable to Counsel who appeared for the State, I am informed by the Attorney General that no payments additional to those referred to in my answer to Dáil Question No. 53 on 7 February 1989 Official Report (Volume 386, No. 7 Column 1475) have been made from his office's Vote. I understand that further such fees will be payable, the amount of which cannot be stated at this stage.

In so far as my Department is concerned the two areas with an involvement in the case are the courts and the Garda Síochána. No additional costs arose under the courts Vote and, as far as Garda costs are concerned, I am informed that the compilation of the information sought would involve a disproportionate amount of Garda resources which could not be justified at the present time.
