Vol. 388 No. 10

Written Answers. - Park Rangers in Phoenix Park.

55.

asked the Minister for Finance if he will make a statement indicating the changes proposed in the Phoenix Park, Dublin 8, where the present grades of gatekeepers and constables are to be replaced by park rangers; and the arrangements which are proposed for those who are resident in the park and have been there for some time.

The Commissioners of Public Works propose establishing a modern park ranger unit in the Phoenix Park to deal effectively with the enforcement of the bylaws and regulations, to provide interpretation to assist visitors' appreciation of the park and to facilitate research and the conservation of the heritage there. The move entails a change from the type of static presence provided by gatekeepers to that of a mobile unit. Existing gatekeepers and constables are being given the opportunity to apply for positions as park rangers. The change does not affect the tenancies of employees resident in the park.
