Vol. 388 No. 10

Written Answers. - Higher Education Grant Refusal.

76.

asked the Minister for Education the reason a higher education, non-adjacent, grant has been refused to a person (details supplied) in County Kildare when she lives more than 15 miles from the university; and if she will make a statement on the matter.

In accordance with the provisions of the higher education grants scheme 1988, the lower adjacent rate of the maintenance element of grant where such element is payable, is applied in the case of every candidate whose normal family residence is within 15 miles of the university which he/she is attending, and in the case of a candidate who could reasonably be expected, in the light of distance and local public transport service, to travel daily between his/her home and such university.

It is understood from Kildare County Council, who are responsible for the administration of the scheme in this case, that the applicant's home is within 15 miles of the college he is attending. Accordingly, the maintenance element of grant payable under the provisions of the scheme is the lower/adjacent rate only.
