Vol. 389 No. 1

Written Answers. - Mountjoy Women's Prison Welfare Officer.

40.

asked the Minister for Justice the reason no prison welfare officer is available at the womens' prison, Mountjoy jail at present; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

A senior probation and welfare officer currently attends at the women's prison on two mornings per week to deal with any prisoner who seeks assistance from the Probation and Welfare Service. If a prisoner had an urgent need to see an officer at another time, the necessary arrangements could be made.

This is a temporary arrangement which has been introduced due to the absence on leave of one of the officers attached to the Probation and Welfare Service. The officer in question is due to resume duty again in June — at that stage the probation and welfare services provided at the women's prison will be reviewed.
