Vol. 389 No. 1

Written Answers. - Dairy/Meat Produce Exports.

49.

asked the Minister for Agriculture and Food the number, location and value of new markets established abroad for (a) Irish dairy produce and (b) Irish meat products to include beef lamb and pig meat for the two-month period ending 31 March, 1989; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

The establishment of new markets for Irish dairy and meat produce is primarily a matter for the private operators concerned with, of course, assistance from the relevant State agencies. I am not, therefore, in a position to detail the number, location and value of new, overseas markets established for these products during the period in question.

On the basis of the provisional trade statistics for February 1989, the value of our dairy products exports increased significantly while the value of meat exports was slightly down compared with February 1988. Figures are not yet available for March 1989.

asked the Minister for Agriculture and Food the total value and volume of Irish dairy exports for the 12 months period ending 31 March, 1989 and for the corresponding period in 1988; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

The information requested by the Deputy is only available in final form for the 12 month period ending 31 January 1989. The value of exports in the period ending 31 January 1989 is estimated at £1,490 million while the corresponding figure for the period ending 31 January 1988 is £1,160 million.

Volume figures for the main diary exports over the two periods are as follows:—

asked the Minister for Agriculture and Food the total value and quantity of Irish meat exports for the 12 months ending 31 March, 1989 and for the corresponding period in 1988; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

The latest figures available from the Central Statistics Office for the value and quantity of Irish meat exports are for the year ended 28 February 1989. The figures for the last two years are as follows:

Meat purchased out of intervention is valued at the commercial export price. Sums totalling £175.4 million and £276.7 million for the years ended 29 February 1988 and 28 February 1989 respectively were also paid to meat exporters in respect of export refunds and payments under the UK variable premium scheme.

asked the Minister for Agriculture and Food the proportion of Irish dairy exports now controlled by (a) the co-operatives, (b) public limited companies and (c) others; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

The information sought by the Deputy is not available as statistics on exports of dairy products are not broken down in the form requested.
