Vol. 389 No. 1

Written Answers. - National Park, County Wicklow.

73.

asked the Minister for Finance if he will make a statement on the future of the entire proposed Wicklow Mountains environment park and also of the Liffey Head Bog which is listed by the Irish Peatland Conservation Council and the Wildlife Service as an area of international scientific importance; and whether this particular area will be conserved under law.

I presume the question refers to the proposal to establish a national park in County Wicklow and I would refer the Deputy to my reply to a question by Deputy De Rossa on this subject on 13 December 1988. (Question No. 165, column 1294, volume 385 Official Report). The discussions with the Department of Energy in relation to the transfer of unplanted areas in their ownership for inclusion in the park have concluded and certain areas have now been transferred to the Office of Public Works for this purpose. A study to define the total area of the proposed park and to make proposals for submission to Government in relation to the establishment of the park is now in progress and is expected to be completed shortly. The Liffey Head Bog forms part of the area under consideration.
