Vol. 389 No. 1

Written Answers. - Organ Transplant Operations.

96.

asked the Minister for Health the number of heart transplant operations which took place in the years (a) 1984, (b) 1985, (c) 1986, (d) 1987 and (e) 1988; and if he has satisfied himself that sufficient moneys are made available to hospitals in order that such life saving operations are made available to persons in need of same.

97.

asked the Minister for Health the number of kidney transplant operations which took place in the years (a) 1984, (b) 1985, (c) 1986, (d) 1987 and (e) 1988; and if he has satisfied himself that sufficient moneys are made available to hospitals in order that such life saving operations are carried out for those people who need them.

I propose to take Questions Nos. 96 and 97 together.

The figures set out below show how many people have been given a new lease of life through the success of this country's transplant programme which I am satisfied is on a par with anything in the developed world. The figures show that the number of heart transplants per annum is steadily increasing and indications are that the total kidney transplant figure for 1989 will be well up on the numbers for 1987 and 1988.

* Heart transplant programme began in 1986.

I would remind the Deputy that transplant programmes depend also on the supply of organs available.
