Vol. 389 No. 1

Written Answers. - Locked Casual Units.

105.

asked the Minister for Health the name of the locked wards for the homeless referred to in his reply to Parliamentary Questions Nos. 16 and 72 on 15 March, 1989; and if he will ensure that the practice of locking homeless people in at night will be terminated.

The locked casual units referred to in my reply on 15 March 1989 — Official Report, columns 863-864, are located at: The Welfare Home, Tullamore; Mount Carmel Home, Clonakilty, and St. Columbanus Home, Killarney.

The unit at Tullamore is a purpose built one with doors which can be opened from the inside. All three units are supervised regularly by hospital staff.

As promised in my reply the health boards with locked casual units have been requested to carry out an immediate review of this practice.
