Vol. 389 No. 1

Written Answers. - Home for Homeless Boys.

110.

asked the Minister for Education the present position regarding funding for the Home for Homeless Boys, Cyrene House, Inishannagh Park, Galway.

The position regarding funding for the Home for Homeless Boys (Cyrene House) is that a grant of £50,000 was allocated in this case by my Department for the 1988-89 period. One of the conditions governing this allocation was that evaluation of the work done in the project would be carried out at local level. My Department have not yet received a report of such an evaluation, which is a prerequisite for the examination of whether funding could be continued for this initiative.

No decison has yet been announced as to the extent of national lottery funds to be allocated to projects for disadvantaged young people for 1989-90. Applications for assistance from whatever resources are made available this year for such initiatives will be considered by the interdepartmental committee on disadvantaged youth. In addition, the general question of my Department's continued support of projects to assist young homeless people will have to be considered in the context of the Child Care Bill, 1988, at present before the Dáil, which envisages the placing of a statutory duty on health boards to promote the welfare of children up to 18 years of age who are not receiving adequate care and protection.
