Vol. 389 No. 2

Written Answers. - Milk Quota.

30.

asked the Minister for Agriculture and Food the amount of milk quota purchased under the milk restructuring scheme in 1988; and the proportion this represents of the total national quota.

On the basis of information supplied to my Department by milk purchasers, the amount of milk purchased and reallocated under the restructuring scheme in 1988 was 33 million gallons. This represents about 3 per cent of the total national quota.

This scheme which I negotiated as part of the 1987-88 prices package allowed, for the first time, quotas to be purchased without the purchase of land as well. Priority in the allocation of these quotas was given to special category producers in particular young farmers and those with small quotas.
