Vol. 389 No. 2

Written Answers. - Reactor Compensation.

34.

asked the Minister for Agriculture and Food if he will outline the details of increased reactor compensation recommended by ERAD; and if he has approved same.

37.

asked the Minister for Agriculture and Food if his attention has been drawn to the low price being paid for reactor cattle to farmers which is causing anger in the farming community and making it difficult for the veterinary officers to get the willing co-operation of farmers who have reactors in their herds; if his attention has further been drawn to the fact that 75 per cent of the market value for reactors is paid in Northern Ireland; if he will introduce similar regulations here; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

51.

asked the Minister for Agriculture and Food if his attention has been drawn to a meeting of farmers in the Milford area of County Donegal to highlight the problem associated with bovine tuberculosis in their herds and to seek Government action to increase compensation levels for affected cattle; if, in view of the seriousness of the situation where many farmers face bankruptcy, he will make financial aid available towards the cost of paying increased compensation; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

68.

asked the Minister for Agriculture and Food, in view of the disastrous returns received by farmers for prime dairy cows slaughtered under the bovine scheme and the consequent serious losses being incurred, if he will consider paying for these cows on valuation on the farm; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

90.

asked the Minister for Agriculture and Food when he will agree to a new scheme of reactor prices and compensation in relation to the ERAD testing round which began in February this year; and if his attention has been drawn to the fact that the failure to make an early announcement is causing considerable anxiety and hardship in a large number of bovine TB black spots in the country.

I propose taking Questions Nos. 34, 37, 51, 68 and 90 together.

I have received a recommendation from ERAD for revised TB and brucellosis reactor grants. Because the proposals entail additional Exchequer expenditure as well as an increase in the existing rates of disease levy, I am having them examined particularly with regard to the existing budgetary situation and the impact they may have on the Government's commitment on the level of funding that would be provided for the four year programme for disease eradication.
