Vol. 389 No. 2

Written Answers. - Inspection of Meat Plant.

57.

asked the Minister for Agriculture and Food, arising from his reply to Parliamentary Question No. 43 of 14 March, 1989 regarding a visit by his Department's inspectors to the premises of Eir Freeze Ltd., East Wall, Dublin 3, if the examination of the matter, which he said was underway, has yet been concluded; if not, when it is expected that it will be concluded; the number of persons who were found on the premises working without the supervision of his Department; if such persons were employees of the company concerned or of a subcontractor; if they were employees of a subcontractor; if he will give the name of the firm; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

The investigation to which the Deputy refers has not yet been concluded nor am I in a position to state when it will be concluded. About 20 persons were on the premises in question working without the supervision of officials of my Department. The owners of the premises and/or the owners of the meat are considered to be responsible for any activities which take place at a cold store. The employment status of the persons on the premises is not of relevance to my Department.
