Vol. 389 No. 2

Written Answers. - Irish Sugar Company.

77.

(Limerick-East) asked the Minister for Agriculture and Food when he was first informed of the moves by Siúicre Éireann cpt to undertake joint ventures or to take other steps to provide alternatives in Thurles, County Tipperary, to employment in the sugar factory.

The Group Corporate Plan for the period 1987-88 to 1991-92, presented by Siúicre Éireann to my Department in December 1987, was approved by the board on 25 November 1987 subject to the following resolution: "The board is concerned about the future viability of sugar processing in Thurles in the long term. In the light of the consequent threat to employment caused by the potential non-viability of the plant, the board decided to secure an alternative industry for Thurles. When this industry is identified the board will then decide on the future of the Thurles sugar factory".
