Vol. 389 No. 2

Written Answers. - Naas (Kildare) Road Improvements.

131.

asked the Minister for the Environment if he has received a request for grant-aid from Naas Urban District Council, County Kildare, in respect of urgently required road improvements at Corban's Lane, Naas; if he will give favourable consideration to this request in the current year; if he anticipates a favourable response to this request; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

This is an urban road. Primary responsibility for the network of non-national roads rests with the local authorities.

In 1986 work was completed on the construction of a new road and footpaths at Corban's Lane, from Friary Road to the new car-park. Special road grants amounting to £152,000 were paid by my Department towards the cost of this scheme.

I understand that the local authority have proposals for further improvements to the road at Corban's Lane and that they are at present considering the question of making a compulsory purchase order in relation to lands required for these improvements. In the circumstances the question of road grant assistance does not arise at this time.
