One of the recommendations of the consultants who were engaged to carry out a security review of my Department's payment systems was that there should be a single authority with responsibility for issuing RSI numbers and that this responsibility should rest with my Department.
The question of transferring responsibility for issuing RSI numbers from the Office of the Revenue Commissioners to my Department has been under examination and agreement in principle to the transfer has been reached with the Revenue Commissioners.
There is a number of practical considerations that need to be resolved in advance of this transfer and discussions are at present taking place between my Department and the Office of the Revenue Commissioners to decide on the new procedures that need to be implemented.
The actual transfer of responsibility for the function will take place as soon as the necessary administrative arrangements are in place.
