asked the Minister for Communications the expenditure in his Department on information technology equipment, on the engagement of consultancy firms for information technology projects and on direct computer personnel staffing costs in each year from 1986 to 1988 inclusive, and the projected amount for 1989; and the extent to which the management grades in his own Department are involved in the development and use of information technology.

Notes: (a) The expenditure at columns (2) and (3) refers to expenditure appropriate to the reorganised functions of the Department of Communications effective from the 31 March 1987. Expenditure in 1986 has been shown against the Department of Tourism and Transport.

(b) IT support services are provided for the Department of Communications by staff in the Department of Tourism and Transport on an agency basis effective from 31 March 1987.

My Department has completed, in consultation with senior management, the formulation of an information technology plan. The plan is based on the Department's objectives and critical success factors and is currently being implemented in the Department with the active participation of management grades.
