Vol. 389 No. 4

Written Answers. - County Cork Roads Funding.

140.

asked the Minister for the Environment if he will make financial aid available for road repairs in a severely disadvantaged area (details supplied) in County Cork.

I assume that the Deputy is referring to roads other than those classified as national roads.

The 1989 discretionary road grant allocations notified to Cork County Council for regional and county roads total £6.6 million, compared with grant payments amounting to £4.4 million under equivalent headings in 1988. The local authority has a wide discretion in the application of these grants. The £6.6 millin includes a grant of £249,000 for county road improvements eligible for EC aid under the Western Package. In addition, the local authority has been allocated a local improvements scheme grant of £243,000 in respect of non-public farm road projects eligible for EC aid under the package. In 1988, the western package was revised to cover, inter alia, all areas of the country designated as less favoured by the EC under Directive 85/350.
