asked the Minister for Education the expenditure in her Department on information technology equipment, on the engagement of consultancy firms for information technology projects and on direct computer personnel staffing costs in each year from 1986 to 1988 inclusive and the projected amount for 1989; and the extent to which the management grades in her own Department are involved in the development and use of information technology.

Details of expenditure in 1986, 1987 and 1988 and of projected expenditure in 1989 in my Department on: information technology equipment; engagement of consultancy firms for information technology projects; direct computer personnel staffing costs in the Department's IT Unit are as follows:—

Staff costs are based on the rates appropriate to the particular years, provided by the Department of Finance, and include superannuation charges and overheads costs.

One principal officer has responsibility, part-time, for information technology developments in the Department. All information technology plans and development proposals are submitted to the top management of my Department for consideration and discussion, and to ensure that any developments will comply with my Department's information technology strategy. The management grades in my Department fully support all information technology developments within the Department.
