Vol. 389 No. 4

Written Answers. - Security Intelligence Services.

81.

asked the Minister for Justice whether the Government have proposals to introduce legislation establishing a body to examine the operations of the security and intelligence services; whether his attention has been drawn to the existence of such bodies in other countries such as Canada; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

As I have made clear to the House on a number of occasions previously, I could not undertake to indicate, by way of reply to a parliamentary question, the legislative proposals I might have in a particular area. In accordance with normal practice, any such proposals I may have will be announced in the ordinary way when they have been considered by the Government.

With regard to the remaining part of the question, the Deputy can be assured that I keep abreast of developments internationally which relate to my areas of responsibility.
