Vol. 389 No. 5

Written Answers. - Postal Service.

17.

asked the Minister for Communications whether, in the context of the national plan, he set quantitative targets for the stated objective of improving the quality of the postal service over the next five years.

One of An Post's primary objectives is to ensure that the quality of their letter delivery service is of the highest possible standard. The company have set themselves a target of next working day delivery of 90 per cent of correctly addressed letters.

As I stated in reply to questions on this subject on 1 February 1989, I have indicated to An Post my concern about a downturn in the speed of mail deliveries. I am satisfied that the company are successfully addressing the problem and I am glad to inform the Deputy that the results of the latest independent survey carried out for An Post showed that a next working day delivery rate of 85 per cent was achieved. This compares with a figure of 82 per cent as shown by a survey carried out in late 1988.
