Vol. 389 No. 5

Written Answers. - Telecommunications Charges.

23.

asked the Minister for Communications whether he has, in the context of the national plan, set quantitative targets for the stated objective of bringing Irish telephone charges closer to those in other EC member states, over the next five years; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

While quantitative targets for price reductions have not been set in the context of the national plan, Telecom Éireann are committed to improving financial performance and reducing their charges in real terms. The decision to implement price reductions must be made on a commercial basis by Telecom Éireann on a year to year basis and the extent to which this can be done will have to be balanced with the demands of reducing indebtedness, providing for capital investment and paying dividends on share capital.
