Vol. 389 No. 5

Written Answers. - Intermediate Goods and Services.

42.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce the proportion of intermediate goods and services which have been purchased in Ireland by foreign grant-aided industry in each of the past three years; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

I am informed by the Industrial Development Authority that the purchase of Irish raw materials and services by foreign grant—aided industry over the last three years for which data is available, 1985-1987, has increased significantly.

Based on the results of annual economy expenditures surveys carried out by the IDA it is estimated that for foreign owned industry, purchases of Irish raw materials rose from £825 million in 1985 to £956 million in 1987 in constant 1987 prices. The proportion of these companies' total expenditure on raw materials sourced in Ireland has risen from 27.5 per cent in 1985, to 29.6 per cent in 1986 and 31.6 per cent in 1987.

With regard to Irish services it is estimated that purchases of Irish services by foreign owned industry rose from £763 million in 1985 to £932 million in 1987, again in constant 1987 prices. The proportion of total services' expenditures sourced in Ireland rose from 66.9 per cent in 1985 to 68.3 per cent in 1986 and 69.8 per cent in 1987.
