Vol. 389 No. 5

Written Answers. - Ministerial Orders.

68.

asked the Minister for Agriculture and Food the Acts or provisions of Acts passed by the Houses of the Oireachtas which relate to his Department and which have not yet come into operation because the necessary ministerial orders have not yet been made.

In the case of legislation as described by the Deputy and for which I have responsibility the position is as follows:

(a) Abattoirs Act, 1988—

Before this Act can be implemented four sets of detailed regulations have to be introduced and full-time veterinary staff have to be recruited and trained. These matters are in hand and it is proposed to commence very shortly the process of inspecting abattoirs with a view to licensing them in early autumn.

(b) Diseases of Animals Act, 1966—

There are some sections of the Act regarding the control of animal disease which it has not yet been found necessary to invoke.
