Vol. 389 No. 5

Written Answers. - Hartstown, Dublin, Site.

95.

asked the Minister for Education, with reference to her reply to Parliamentary Question No. 231 of 9 February 1988 and in the light of correspondence (details supplied) if she accepts the urgent need for a major clean-up of the site at Hartstown, Clonsilla, Dublin 15; if she accepts that it would be possible for the football club to expend the necessary moneys on the clean-up and on the levelling of the site, which would be necessary to make the site usable as football pitches without a long lease; if, in the circumstances, she will indicate a minimum lease of five years to this club; and if she will make a statement on the matter.

In response to a proposal received, my Department have offered a local soccer club use of the proposed school site at Hartstown on a year to year basis. The club's response to this offer is awaited.

It is not in my Department's interests to enter into long term arrangements for the use of vacant second level school sites as it is necessary to retain the right to develop or manage the property as required, free from the constraints which such an arrangement would impose on the Department's control of the sites. In the circumstances, I am not prepared a grant a lease for five years as requested by the club.

My Department will consider the steps necessary for the maintenance of the Hartstown site, in the context of the availability of resources, when the outcome of the offer made to the club is known.
