Vol. 389 No. 7

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Water and Sewerage Schemes.

10.

asked the Minister for the Environment if his attention has been drawn to the fact that two-thirds of the workforce have lost their jobs at a company (details supplied) in County Louth because of the cut-backs in sewerage and water schemes; the schemes he proposes to sanction; the cost of the schemes; the number of schemes which this company will qualify for; the cost of same; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

While I am aware of the difficulties being experienced by this company, it would not be proper to nominate the products of any individual company for use in sanitary services projects.

Despite the competing demands for capital from various sectors, the level of investment in the last two years in the sanitary services programme has been relatively constant, with £60 million being provided in 1988 and £62.5 million in 1989. Under the national development plan, expenditure in the years 1990-93 is projected to continue at the 1989 level.

I have already approved seven major schemes to start in 1989 with a total cost over £24 million. Details are given in a schedule which I propose to circulate with the Official Report.

In addition, I expect to approve tenders for about 12 new schemes, with a total value of some £21 million, in the course of the year. As tenders for these schemes are currently being sought, it would not be appropriate to divulge the estimated cost of individual schemes, as this might affect the tendering process.

I am very conscious of the need to provide a continuous programme of work that will be of benefit to the consumer and the pipe manufacturing industry and I would point out, in this connection, that the 1989 programme includes a significant amount of pipeline work. I can assure the Deputy that I will continue to authorise as many new projects as possible to go to tender and to construction stage, bearing in mind the limits on the capital available.

The following is the schedule:

Schemes approved in 1989 to go to Construction

1. Ballymore Eustace water supply, Dublin.

2. Tymon North stream, Dublin.

3. Erris regional water supply, County Mayo.

4. Achill sewerage scheme, County Mayo.

5. Elphin and Strokestown water supply, County Roscommon.

6. Ballinagard sewerage scheme, County Roscommon.

7. Belturbet water supply, County Cavan.
