Vol. 389 No. 7

Written Answers. - Planning Laws.

143.

asked the Minister for the Environment whether he has satisfied himself that the planning laws are adequate to protect buildings that are of particular significance to our heritage in view of a court case (details supplied); and if he will make a statement on the matter.

I am satisfied, notwithstanding the judgment referred to, that appropriate powers are available under the Local Government (Planning and Development) Acts to facilitate the preservation of buildings of artistic, architectural or historic interest. The Local Government (Planning and Development) (No. 2) Bill, 1988, and the Derelict Sites Bill, 1989, both currently before the Dáil, will further improve the situation in this regard.
