Vol. 389 No. 7

Written Answers. - Custom House Docks Project Employment.

38.

asked the Minister for the Environment if he has satisfied himself with the number of construction jobs created by the Custom House Docks Authority which at present stand at 205 and not the 1,500 jobs which were promised, the jobs being divided into 41 from the north inner city and 164 from outside the inner city areas; the reason there are no construction jobs allocated to people from the south inner city areas; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

I am informed that by September 1989 construction jobs on the Custom House Docks project should increase to some 400, with a further increase to some 500 jobs by the end of the year. The figure of 1,500 relates to peak construction stage of the project.

The master project agreement, drawn up between the Custom House Docks Development Authority and the development company, makes special provision for all reasonable efforts to be made to provide employment on the site for: (i) residents from within the north inner city area, i.e. the parishes of the North Wall, Sean McDermott Street and the East Wall; (ii) residents from the rest of the city of Dublin.

At present, some 67 per cent of the construction workforce is comprised of Dublin city residents. Some 25 per cent of the workforce — also included in the Dublin city figure — is currently drawn from the north inner city area.
