Vol. 389 No. 7

Written Answers. - Heritage Surveys.

58.

asked the Taoiseach whether his Department have considered promoting the idea of heritage surveys of the various localities within Dublin city to be completed in co-operation with local communities and FÁS; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

I will bring the Deputy's suggestion to the attention of the National Heritage Council.

FÁS are involved in 18 heritage surveys at the moment and are involved in discussions in respect of a similar number. Five surveys are specifically of flora and fauna and are in co-operation with the Irish Wildlife Federation. The remainder are divided between archaeological/ historical surveys and indexing parish records. Seven surveys are taking place in the Dublin area.

In addition, a group has been established under my Department to make recommendations for a Dublin heritage area development in the Liberties following the success of the Viking Village established by Irish Life. The group reported in December last and it has been decided by me that six projects recommended by them should be considered for development. It is envisaged that these projects will be attractive for private sector investment. Dublin Corporation are involved in these developments for which in many cases they will be able to provide suitable sites.
