Vol. 389 No. 7

Written Answers. - Census Enumerators.

61.

asked the Taoiseach the proportion of those who were employed to carry out the job of enumerator on each of the last three censuses/labour force surveys who were out of work at the time of employment.

Labour force survey interviewers are recruited from a list of applicants nominated for interview by FAS. The percentage of those recruited in each of the last three years who were unemployed at the date of the interview, was as follows:

Survey Year

Percentage Unemployed

1987

65.3

1988

47.0

1989

46.1

Included as unemployed are persons in receipt of unemployment benefit/ assistance and those otherwise unemployed or needy. A system of preference for the appointment of such candidates operated in 1987 and previous years. However, due to a decision by an equality officer of the Labour Court that such a preference system discriminated against married women, it was discontinued. For the 1988 and subsequent surveys recruitment was on the basis of merit only.
