Vol. 389 No. 7

Written Answers. - Family Mediation Service.

75.

asked the Minister for Justice the funding which will be provided on an ongoing basis for the Family Mediation Service; if he will make a statement on the work undertaken by this service; the funds which were provided in (i) 1987 and (ii) 1988; and the funds which are proposed for the service for 1989.

The Family Mediation Service was established in July 1986 to operate as a pilot scheme for a three-year period. At the end of that period a decision will be made regarding the future of the service, including funding, if appropriate.

Mediation is a process whereby a third party, a skilled mediator, brings a husband and wife together to work out their own solutions when their marriage has irretrievably broken down. The service is available free of charge to married couples resident in the State.

The funding provided for the operation of the service in 1987, 1988 and 1989 is indicated in the Revised Estimates for Public Services, 1987, 1988 and 1989, respectively.
