A total of 20 people have been taken on as contract/consultancy staff in my Department from 1 January 1987 to date. I should point out, however, that the number of posts involved is 12. The number of people serving in these posts at any one time never exceeded 12. The extra persons were employed to replace staff who resigned or were on sick leave, or transferred to another Department.

The information requested by the Deputy is as follows. Since 1 January 1987 two executive engineers have been employed in my Department on one year contracts. Their contracts expired on 4 January and 12 February 1988 respectively. No staff have been employed in my Department in a consultancy capacity in the period in question.
