Vol. 389 No. 9

Written Answers. - Kildare VEC Posts.

78.

asked the Minister for Education the position regarding the employment of caretakers/secretaries in various Vocational Education Committee schools in County Kildare; the number of applications for the filling of such posts she has received to date; if and when she intends to approve the filling of such posts; and if she will make a statement on the matter, having regard to the fact that such posts have been filled in other parts of the country.

My Department has received requests for the filling of six caretaking-secretarial posts in County Kildare VEC. The previous Government in 1983 began a phasing out process of the appointment of caretakers in schools. This phasing out is continuing.

My Department is precluded under the terms of Government policy on public service staffing from sanctioning any increase in the existing personnel resources of the VEC.

It is a matter, therefore, for County Kildare VEC to redeploy the personnel resources available to it in its scheme in the best manner possible to meet the needs of its schools. Similar problems in other areas have been addressed in the same way.
