asked the Minister for Education if she will arrange for a study to be carried out on the methods of teaching Irish in national schools, in view of the failure to achieve general language competence with the existing system; and if she will make a statement on the matter.

The Review Body on the Primary Curriculum have been asked to pay particular attention to the analysis of the aims and objectives of the primary curriculum, how effectively these are being achieved in regard to Irish, and what structures could be adopted to ensure that the objectives outlined could be evaluated as pupils progress through school. The review body are expected to complete their work later this year.
