Vol. 390 No. 1

Written Answers. - Unpaid Court Penalties.

43.

asked the Minister for Justice the amount of money due to the State in unpaid court penalties.

44.

asked the Minister for Justice the number of warrants for execution currently with the Garda authorities in respect of non payment of lawfully imposed court fines.

I propose to take Questions Nos.43 and 44 together.

The value of fines collected is at present running at approximately £6 million per annum. Fines become due as soon as they are imposed but they are not reckoned as being in arrear until the time allowed for payment has expired. The value of fines for which the time for payment has expired is estimated at £7.5 million. There are some 55,000 fines warrants in the hands of the Garda awaiting execution.
