Vol. 390 No. 1

Written Answers. - National Lottery Funds.

91.

andMr. Enright asked the Minister for Finance the total sum of money in the Exchequer, being proceeds from the national lottery, as at the most recent date; the total capital amount; and the interest thereon.

The proceeds of the national lottery are held in the national lottery fund and surplus funds are only transferred into the Exchequer as required to meet expenditure on approved programmes. There is therefore no balance in the Exchequer.

The balance in the national lottery fund as at 12 May 1989 was £42,718,128.72, a portion of which will be required to cover the current and prospective liabilities of the lottery. I have already intimated to the Dáil that the bulk of the surplus available in 1989 will be required to meet the 1989 costs of projects and programmes which were approved for funding from the lottery in 1987 and in 1988.

Since the commencement of the lottery, £4,384,732.48 has been paid in interest to the national lottery fund and a further £240,462.89 has accrued.
