Vol. 390 No. 2

Written Answers. - Remedial Pupils in Primary School.

25.

asked the Minister for Education the number of primary school pupils who are regarded as remedial or slow learners; and if she regards the educational facilities available to such pupils as adequate to meet their educational needs.

The concept of primary school pupils as remedial or slow learners is a broad one which does not readily lend itself to assessment in terms of numbers. My Department have assigned approximately 840 teachers to specialist posts in remedial work in national schools and these provide a service in over 1,100 national schools, in certain cases through sharing arrangements.

I should point out that remedial education at primary level is a matter in the first instance for the pupils' own class teachers.
