Thursday, 18 May 1989

Vol. 390 No. 3

Written Answers. - Cardiovascular Diseases Proposals.

54.

asked the Minister for Health if he will support at the Council of Health Ministers' meeting on 16 May 1989, the proposals concerning cardiovascular diseases in the EC; the specific campaign being submitted for approval at that Council meeting; and if he will make a statement on the Irish Government's attitude to this.

I attended the Council of Health Ministers' meeting in Brussels on 16 May 1989 and I supported the draft conclusions proposed by the Spanish Presidency in relation to co-ordinating Community wide action on cardiovascular disease.

As in most industrial countries, coronary heart disease is the main source of morbidity and mortality in Ireland and I therefore, welcome this initiative which should stimulate debate on this important subject and lead to increased liaison between the statutory and non-statutory organisations concerned both within the member states and throughout the Community as a whole.
