Vol. 390 No. 4

Written Answers. - Chilean Death Sentences.

35.

asked the Minister for Foreign Affairs if he will call for the rescinding of the sentence of death passed by the Santiago Military Judge on persons (details supplied) on 9 February, 1989; and if he will seek a full judicial review of their case by the Chilean legal authorities, in view of the considerable concern about the case and the sentences imposed.

The lawyers of the people concerned have appealed against the sentence on the grounds that they did not receive a fair trial and that the judicial authorities failed to carry out investigations requested by the defence which would prove their innocence. We and our European partners are giving close attention to this case and will take any joint action which may be justified in the light of the outcome of the appeal.
