Vol. 390 No. 4

Written Answers. - Palmerstown (Dublin) Crime Level.

38.

asked the Minister for Justice if his attention has been drawn to the continuing high level of crime in the Palmerstown area, Dublin 20 and in particular the increasing incidents of crime in Oak Court Estate; the plans he has to increase the policing levels in the Palmerstown area; the plans he has to combat crime there; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

I am informed by the Garda authorities that the level of crime in the Palmerstown area is not especially high. While there has been a number of crimes — mainly burglary and larceny — in the Oak Court Estate in recent months, the detection rate has been significant and charges have already been or will shortly be brought against a number of persons.

I am also informed that the Palmerstown area is patrolled by foot and mobile patrols from Ballyfermot and Ronanstown stations and also receives attention from other specialist Garda units. The Garda strength assigned to those stations is considered to be adequate to meet the policing needs of all the areas which they serve, including the Palmerstown area.

There is an active neighbourhood watch scheme in operation in the area and this is playing a useful role in helping the Garda to curb local crime problems.

The position will be kept under review in the light of changing needs and circumstances.
