101.

asked the Minister for Health the present number of people with mental handicap, in the different categories and age groups (a) in receipt of a service and (b) not in receipt of a service, in each of the health board areas; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

(a) The following tables indicate the number of people by age and degree of handicap in receipt of mental handicap services in each health board area. In addition there are approximately 2,000 people accommodated in the psychiatric hospitals.

(b) It is my policy that mentally handicapped persons receive appropriate services as required. To this end I have ensured, despite the overall financial constraints, that the allocations for the agencies providing such services have been protected in real terms and that these services are provided in a co-ordinated prioritised way. The regional co-ordinating committee's representative of the Department, the health boards and the voluntary agencies are at present assessing the position particularly in relation to any unmet need. When the unmet need is comprehensively quantified I will communicate with the Deputy.
