Vol. 390 No. 5

Written Answers. - Death of Prisoner.

24.

asked the Minister for Justice the circumstances in which a person (details supplied) was found dead in Longford Garda station on 25 April 1989; the basis on which this person was being held in the Garda station; the investigations which have been made into the death; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

Inquiries are being conducted into this matter by a Garda chief superintendent and the Governor of Mountjoy Prison and an inquest will also take place. I am, therefore, not in a position at present to make a statement on the circumstances of the death.

As to the basis in which the person concerned was being held in a Garda station, the position is that he was being brought by members of the Prison Service from Letterkenny Circuit Court to Mountjoy Prison and, on route, he was brought to Longford Garda station for the purposes of a meal break.
