Vol. 390 No. 5

Written Answers. - Export Credit Insurance.

61.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce when he expects the investigations into the major discrepancy between the beef export figures to Iraq for the two years 1987 and 1988 and the export credit insurance provided for those exports in the same period will be completed; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

As I indicated in reply to Questions Nos. 59 of 20 April 1989 and 53 of 27 April 1989, the investigation referred to by the Deputy is being carried out by my Department in consultation with the Central Statistics Office, the Insurance Corporation of Ireland, plc, the Department of Agriculture and the exporters. The investigation is necessarily of a complex nature involving considerable documentation. While the matter is receiving priority attention and a considerable amount of work has been done, it is also essential that the investigation be thorough and comprehensive in every respect. Accordingly, I am not in a position to indicate when the investigation will be completed.
