Dáil Éireann debate -
Thursday, 25 May 1989

Vol. 390 No. 6

Order of Business (Resumed).

I have given notice to the Chair, under section 30 of Standing Orders, that I wish to seek an urgent debate, as provided for in Standing Orders, to discuss the ruling of the President of the High Court in respect of the alleged negligence of this House, and the other House, in providing constitutional boundaries for Dáil constituencies.

I received the notice to which the Deputy has referred as I was making my way into the Chamber to commence the business of the House this morning. Clearly, I had not time to consider it. I will consider it in due course and communicate with the Deputy.

I should like to raise on the Adjournment the continuing cash crisis of the Southern Health Board affecting counties Kerry and Cork.

I will communicate with the Deputy.

Mr. Noonan

(Limerick East): I should like permission to raise on the Adjournment the closure of the casualty unit in St. John's Hospital in Limerick.

Nobody is going to need it.

There will be casualties on the Government side of the House.

I will communicate with Deputy Noonan.

I should like permission to raise on the Adjournment the subject matter of the report submitted by the all-party committee to the Government on the lottery.

I will communicate with the Deputy.

I should like to raise on the Adjournment the unexplained and unreasonable delay in opening the new hospital in Cavan which has been idle for almost two years and is beginning to show signs of needing repair.

I will communicate with the Deputy.

I should like to raise on the Adjournment the failure of the Government to introduce the necessary legislation to ratify the European Patent Convention and the consequent loss of investment in the pharmaceutical industry.

I will communicate with the Deputy.

Mr. Noonan

(Limerick East): Will the Taoiseach make arrangements today to allow some of his backbenchers to make their maiden speeches in this Dáil?

We would need to extend the sitting by about five days.

Some of those backbenchers will not be back.
