Vol. 392 No. 7

Written Answers. - Westport New Primary School.

182.

asked the Minister for Education the present position regarding provision of a long awaited new primary school at the Quay, Westport, County Mayo; if she will instruct her Department to abide by the originally agreed grant of 9 October as per letter of 27 January 1987, to be adjusted to final costs; her views on whether it is appropriate that the community concerned, which has already raised £40,000, should now have to raise a total of £111,000; and if she will make a statement on the matter.

Tenders for the provision of a new national school at the Quay, Westport, County Mayo which have been forwarded by the school authorities are being examined by my Department. My Department has requested further information from the school's architect and when this has been received and examined the question of the placing of the contract will arise.

At that point the level of local contribution will be decided upon having regard to the school authorities' earlier acceptance that the general purposes room and some abnormal items of work would not be grant-aided. In arriving at an appropriate local contribution for the project my Department will give the fullest regard to the school's circumstances.
