Vol. 392 No. 7

Written Answers. - Water Reactor.

20.

asked the Minister for Energy if he will outline the position of the Government on the proposed siting of the second powered water reactor at Wylfa, Anglesea, North Wales, in view of its proximity to our east coast; if the Government have been informed or consulted by the British authorities about the proposal; if he will support the holding of an inquiry into the proposal; if he will be represented at any such inquiry; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

The Government were not approached formally by the UK authorities as regards the proposal to build a pressurised water reactor at Wylfa in Anglesea.

The Government are totally opposed to any expansion of the UK nuclear industry, especially on the west coast of Britain, and the UK Government have been made aware of our grave concerns.

I would fully support the holding of a full public inquiry and understand from informal contacts within the UK that as objections to the proposals have been lodged, there will be such an inquiry. The Irish Government are not represented at planning hearings in the UK, but make their views known directly to the British Government.
